We're in this together.
My ultimate goal is to listen to your needs and to evolve with my community to solve problems together, but I get it--you need to know where I stand. I've outlined some of my core beliefs below. Drop me a line or come say hi at an event if you want to discuss anything you read here.
Variety of Career Paths
I support a diversity of options and educational paths for students to encourage them to meet their personal goals. That may be a continuation of study after their graduation from high school, or training in a certified trade program. In order for someone to make a mindful decision on a career path, they need exposure to a wide range of available options and perspectives.
I believe that teaching and learning occur best when both the teacher and the student are relaxed and ready for learning. A principle requirement of that is that both teacher and student feel safe and secure in their school.
We all remember the social turmoil of high school. It's an unfortunate fact that there are internal sources of strife at schools. I believe these are counter-productive to learning and can be handled with a community-based approach.
Because more experienced teachers have already developed and honed their skills, teacher retention is a key to better schools. Salary is important, but it is not always salary that drives a decision to stay or go. I will work with teachers to understand their needs and I will fight for the issues that most affect their decisions to stay or leave Fluvanna County.
Some direct effects of the learning environment will be apparent, for instance, general happiness at school. Some things are harder to judge. Is each child learning the knowledge and skills needed to participate and compete in our economy and be a contributing citizen? I will work with the school board, teachers and staff, students and parents, to find the right balance of testing.
One of my jobs will be helping to shape the school budget and financial monitoring. We, as taxpayers, contribute funds on a local, state, and federal level to support our schools. It is very important to make sure that money is used to maximize education at the student level.
